am reception on car radios

Does anyone know what the common cause for poor am radio reception? We have a 98 ford explorer Eddie Bauer Edition and the am reception has always been lousy.I've heard it could be the ground wire.If thats true does anyone know where it would be grounded? We have the radio out checking it and don't see anything wrong, but i know that don't mean much.any input would be greatly appreiciatted.Thanks.

Reception

The ground is commonly at the fender if you have a fender mount antenna. If not it is in the rear or side rear glass and they don't receive am signals as well as the old style antennas.I worked with a manufacture that used an antenna amplifier for the in glass systems that was powered via the electrical system so there were many opportunities for malfunction.
