95 Buick Regal Automatic Transmission Lock/Park on the Column Function

Any help would be appreciated ...

My 95 Regal will no longer go into Park position and lock. Car continues to roll like neutral position. Auto Trunk mechanism won't work. Car will not start in Park position but will start in neutral.

But other than that, transmission shifts just fine and normal

Someone looked at briefly and said a cable of some sort would need replacing?

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance, Bill

If the shifter is on the column then the linkage is either worn or mis-adjusted, if it has a floor shifter then it will be a cable that needs adjustment or repair.

I may have mis led you. Is this a front wheel drive car? If it is it is cable shifted weather it is column or floor shift, and it needs adjustment.

could be an adjustment needed and not a cable needing full replacement??

Shifter

Because it worked well for years and is now problematic I would think something has changed. If it's a cable then it likely needs a new one due to wear. If it's linkage it likely needs a bushing of some sort. You need to due some mechanic type stuff and grab a light and look for the looseness.

I would check the neutral switch. The switch at the end of the shift cable where it attaches to the transmission body--this switch tell the transmission which gear you have selected from inside the car. Something might have gotten misaligned--if you have a repair manual it will show you haw to check that everything lines up and how to re-adjust the cable should something have been pulled, thus resulting in some possible cable slack etc. . . .

A neutral safety switch keeps the engine from starting while in gear and it operates the reverse lights. It shouldn't have any effect of transmission function. The newer electronic transmissions utilize a computer processor in the shifter assembly that works differently and can cause all types of problems.

When you move the shift lever throught the gear choices, do you feel the 'dents' at each gear selection?
If not maybe you cable now needs adjustment.
In my 95 altima I have to adjust the cable at the neutral switch.
