much play in the steering wheel. The steering seemed to get stiff so lubed the universals in the steering shaft under the hood near the wheel well hump, seemed to loosen up the steering but now seems to have too much play in the steering wheel. Is there anyway to remove some of the play?
Thanks

Get a good trouble light & a buddy... Have the buddy shake the wheel back & forth & anywhere you see unwanted movement is where you will have to replace or adjust stuff... Inspect the entire steering linkage including the ball joints & tie rod ends,, steering gear mount bolts & shaft from the steering wheel to the steering box... Check the ball joints really close on this model @ this age.... Roger

But before the grease-job, you didn't notice the free-play?
If so, I'd suspect those joints. Maybe the new grease blew worn needle bearingss out of position?
I'm just rambling because 1 - only one response, and 2 - I do not know your set-up. But am thinking what can happen with driveshaft u-joints. You'd think u-joint problems, no matter the application, could yield similar maladies?
You could also look up any service bulletins regarding this on your vehicle.
