93 chevy lumina terrible gas mileage

Got a 93 chevy lumina 3.1 liter that is getting terrible gas mileage. It does not leak any gas. just wondering what can be done to get better gas mileage, gets about 9 miles to the gallon.

Yikes! Check engine light on by any chance?

Basic tune-up items recently? Plugs, wires, cap & rotor (if equipped)?

Ya, even my big block V-8 ford 4x4 gets better mileage than that. How does it run? what does the exhaust look like?

Must be what they call loading up, with gas. Have someone follow you while you accelerate and cruise. See if black smoke. Might suspect fuel regulator went south. Pull plug (per marksr's exhaust suggestion) and see if powdery black soot on it.

Also make sure something really odd did not happen to the timing that it got severely retarded.

Even if you lost a cylinder(which you would know as it feel and sound out of balance), I'd think you'd even get better mileage than that!

This is presuming that you know how to figure gas mileage consumption.

(BTW, muy old honkin 6000 pound, "School of Rock" smokin' V-8 van gets about that!
