car sputters only in moderate revs

hi guys i have a skoda felicia 96 it sputters only at moderate revs like when i am supposed to change the gear. Before it was doing when it was idling but my mechanic went inside and told me the valves had tightened up, so when he dealt with them he adjusted the ignition timing as well what could cause the sputtering.

i have a new fuel pump so tht is out, the plugs were changed recently any help greatly appreciated thanks

Never heard of valves "tightening up". As things wear, the valve adjustment gets looser. I agree that plug wires could be the culprit.
