Unhappy 93 ford Escort won't start

I own a 1993 1.9 engine automatic Ford Escort. Car said was low on coolant. My friend put water in overflow tank. Then shortly thereafter saw white smoke for about 10 seconds out the tailpipe. Drove home and parked. Then drove less than a mile and less than 20mph. Car shut off. had new oil change and oil filter Saturday. Car has gas. Pulled spark plugs. They are dry. Dosen't seem to be any water in oil that we can tell. All lights on dashboard come on. Car acts like wants to turn over but nothing. New battery bought in June. Just passed inspection ion September.
Friend tapped on thing(don't know technical term) to shoot out gas. It shot out a little and then nothing. He tried tapping several more times same result. Prices I got for head gasket work too expensive to fix car. Car has 124,000 miles. Friend checking fuel fuses, relay ect tmrw. Another friend recommended I check emergency shutoff switch and timing belt also. Any ideas? Please help. Thanks

1993 Ford escort reply

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I am having someone check the timing belt today. And was told that if it needs replaced, I should also replace the water pump. Will let all know of results.
Thanks again!
