Noise from 99 GMC Safari

Can some one help me identify what this sound is from a 99 GMC Safari? I recorded this towards the back of the engine by the transmission. The noise starts about 11 seconds into the recording. Their is no image in the video, just the sound.

Thanks,
Karl

Maybe the starter drive is not retracting fully, if the spring in the selonoid is weak it will let the drive creep out and hit the flywheel while the engine is running. This is one possibility, if you can I would have someone listen to it before tearing into it, I do not know what a starter costs for this vehicle but I will bet it is not cheap.

Probably the same starter as on my wrecker, not too expensive. Not sure about the noise; I can't remember hearing one quite like that.

I don't think if the starter but it sort of makes sense. I will check it out.

Thanks,
Karl

I pulled the started and it was a bad bendix. It would slip back and forth just by rocking the starter. Replaced it and no more noise.

Thanks for the help.
