antifreeze testing

I want to test my Rav4's antifreeze. Antifreeze was flushed 4 years ago by autoshop. I will have auto shop flush antifreeze again soon. I want to test antifreeze for DIY learning purpose. How can I determine what kind of antifreeze is in my car? Should I get antifreeze from the reservoir or under radiator cap?

Most auto parts stores carry bulb type ball antifreeze testers. Very inexpensive. It is best to retrieve the circulated liquid, so if you can get the cap off the radiator safely while cool, test it from there. Most car manufacturers will stipulate the type antifreeze needed and the ratio to water for your application. If you use ethylene glycol (most common) the bulb type testers work fine. If using propolyene glycol (Sierra and others....safer around animals, and non poisonous) I believe you will need paper strips similar to litmus paper you used in chemistry class, sold also at the stores.
