Typical life span...

What is the typical life span of rubber exhaust grommets? I just replaced the two on my '95 Crown Vic today, back one was easy (did it in parking lot of parts store), front one had to jack up the muffler to get it on both bolts while having the car jacked up so I could get under it. I had never seen them on a car I owned before, but it was nice to have a $10 fix for a car. Now getting Febreeze to get rid of the smell of gas inside the car from a gas can leaking a little bit.

Which is worse, the smell of gas inside the car or a scent headache from the stuff you used to get rid of the gas smell? Febreeze in this case due to a recommendation from the auto parts store guy.
