Cool 2000 ford ranger 2.5

Truck started acting up about 4 weeks ago with a loose of power and continued to get worse until something had to be done, we did and tuneup on the truck, after the tune up we started the truck and it ran just as bad as before, mind you the plugs and wires had 100,000 miles on them so we are shocked it didn't help improve the performance, its backfiring thru the intake and exhaust as if the timing is off or we have wires crossed but we verified the wiring order and triple checked it but still the same deal, my buddy seems to think it could be fuel inj related. any suggestions

possibly-!!
if has been run for quite an extended time-with multiple cyl/missfire's- a plugged 'cat' converter.
try-some rust penetrant -on the exhaust manifold - to -down-pipe -nuts-loosen them 3-4 turns / creates an awful exhaust leak/noise-but releaves -excess back pressure -from cloged cat.
give it a road test-??
