2003 F150 drive belt

I need to replace the drive belt on a 4.2L engine. I can easily locate he belt tensioner but I can't figure out how to detension it. The guy at the parts store told me to put a socke on the nut in the center but looking at it, this just doesn't seem to make sense. It doesn't look like that would work. Any advice would be appreciated.

You put a socket on the nut in the center of the tensioner, or better yet a belt tensioner tool, and rotate it, i want to say clockwise, and that will release the tension of the belt. Let the wrench, or tensioner tool go slowly or it'll fly back and possibly hit you.

Sometimes the bolt on the pulley will only spin with the bearing. There should be a square hole where you can install the head of a ratchet and move the tensioner. Other autos require a star bit to rotate the tensioner
