2001 Explorer Thermostat

I have a 2001 4.0L auto trans 4 wheel drive Explorer that I'm having cooling problems with.

My temp gauge is staying at 3/4 toward high where it normally is at just below half. I was driving yesterday and noticed it on my way home from vacation. I was 400 miles from home and just kept watching the gauge and it stayed there all the way home. The gauge itself is good because it does move when the engine has been sitting.

I'm thinking it's the thermostat because the fluid level remained in the full range and there wasn't any leaks. Could it be the water pump instead?

Thanks for your help

try thermostat 1st!
if it is a SOCH motor-it is easier if you remove the throttle body.
while at it use a water hosr & back flush the radiator.
refill with new 50/50 coolant
