Neon; no forward gear

I just towed my son home. He has a 1999 Neon. Said when he turned the corner, he thought he heard something "pop" and none of the forward gear positions work, they all stay in neutral. However, reverse works. Any ideas? Is there anything I can look at that I may be able to fix? Or is it internal and needs a transmission shop?
Thanks,
Joe

My guess would be internal; not uncommon for a tranny to go south but still have reverse. Probably time for a professional opinion.

Auto or manual?????

Auto is definitely internal......Since you have reverse, you can Eliminate broken axles, Although it wouldnt hurt to look at them....Or signs of severe fluid leakage That dont originate from a "HOLE KNOCKED THRU THE CASE".

Manual can be a bit more complex......Look under the hood at the shifter "Pivot" assembly. Have someone shift thru the gears one at a time ending with reverse. Did BOTH pivots move ???????
