Problem with '97 Ford escort overheating
Hello,
I have a '97 ford escort. Every now and then the radiator cooling fan kicks off and the engine overheats, sometimes to the point where I have to stop and let the engine rest a while before I start it up and go again. It seems to do it in warm weather more than in cold weather. (Or maybe it does do it in cool weather, but I just don't notice the engine overheating.)
Anyway I've had this one relay replaced several times. The mechanic citing that the relay was the cause, but the problem persists. I just had the problem again and took it to a new mechanic and he said the same relay was the problem again!! I decided not to go ahead and change it again as this relay plus labor is about $150.00. Can anyone help me pinpoint the cause of the real problem? I have a wedding to go to in early July and need to have this cart in tip-top shape for this trip, because it is a 400 mile trip.
Thank you
Jim

Is this a little "Cube" relay , Or an IRC module????
One guess is all I really need.....You have a worn out fan motor.....
It draws excessive current, and burns the contacts in the relay....

Thank you for your reply Unclediezel.
I thought it might be the fan motor and I mentioned it to the mechanic, but he insisted that if the fan motor was messed up it would make a lot of noise or not work at all. The problem is intermittent though. So what should I do?

Not necessarily.....
A "Shorted " winding can cause the problems youve described, With ABSOLUTELY NO noticeable disabilities. If it were "BROKEN" you would see it broken, or hear it broken, But there isnt a mechanic alive or dead who Can see or hear electricity.
Intermittent you say???? Even more likely to be a fan motor, with all the Jostling it gets at 50 MPH....

The mechanic suggested replacing the "relay module", that big box under the aircleaner with a dozen or more wires going to it. Are you guys saying I should replace this as well as the fan motor.
Thanx
