overheated, now losing coolant

I assume it needs a new radiator, but thought I would check if anyone had some safe temporary fixes for the time being.

After a 4 hour drive yesterday, the car (2001 Saturn) overheated. Reservoir was empty; refilled it. 2 hours into the drive back, coolant was down about a liter. Temp gauge operated fine (went up from 'C' to a quarter of the way up, stayed at that point like it usually reads, while driving). 2 hours after that, the coolant light went on again. Topped it off again, saw a few small black flakes in the fluid. Drove the rest of the way back home. This morning, it was down a few ounces, not much. There appears to be a very small amount of coolant on the ground under the reservoir and a bit more up front by the radiator.

Is it worth trying the radiator leak-prevent products, before taking it in to the mechanic for a radiator replacement?

just 'my personal view'
never use stop leak.
try running it for a few days- see how much coolant it is using/loosing.
go from there.
