305 chevy v8 has oil in carburetor from vent hoses

I have a 1979 boat with a 305 chevy v8 and rochester quadrajet. after only a couple of hours of running normal, my rebuilt carb shows oil in and around the top of the carburetor coming from the valve cover vent hoses (no pcv system). my compression numbers are pretty good......is this normal? could this oil mess with my idle? the engine runs good under power but wont idle now.

thanks,

Ed

The blow-by in the engine has to go somewhere. If you don't have a pcv system, and the vent goes to the air cleaner, it is pulling the oil vapors into the carb.. Not harmful, but will foul the plugs and smoke.
