1990 Chevy Cavalier Z24

I have several problems with this car : it stalls below 1000 rpm, dies while driving, starts but immediately dies again. After letting it sit for a few days it drove for about 4 miles then started to high rev. then down shift jolting forward in and out of gear, starting to smell like it was burning, then very hard to brake. Then I just had it towed to avoid causing any more problems.

Has this vehicle had all the regular maintenance... Oil changes, filter changes, spark plugs, etc. done on a regular basis?

And have factory recommended parts been used? Or have "super duper" spark plugs been installed?

Have there been any modifications to the engine or vehicle? Do it yourself wiring?

And was it running fine, then all of a sudden started doing this? Or had problems and getting worse and worse?

Check engine light on? Do you know the codes?

This car has had some maintenance but not for a while, the stalling under 1000 rpm was fixed for a while after replacing the coil pack and alternator. Then problems reoccurred, along with it having a problem with power steering, then it dying while driving, the check engine light came on, and wouldn't restart right away but when it finally did, it died immediately. The spark plugs are fairly new and are factory recommended, brakes are new as well. I don't know the code, or have a reader.

(Quote) starting to smell like it was burning.

That could be a sign of a failing "Catalytic Converter". Answer the following questions.

Has the “Check Engine Light” been on for a while and have you been ignoring it?

Have you ever seen the “Check Engine Light” flashing?

“Click” on or “Copy and Paste” the link below into your address box and then click “Go”. When the page opens follow the instructions for reading “Error Codes”. Post any codes that you find.
