Sounds like a trip to a junk yard for a new (used) pulley is in order

The Idler pulley was off when I got the car. How can I tell which bolt is used to secure the pulley and can there be one to replace it that is a couple of threads longer?

The bolts can differ in length and thread. Rather than , just buy the idler and bolt from a dealer. That route could be a little pricey though. Second option, is to go to a well stocked auto parts store, that's run by experienced people who can match up a bolt for you. Third option is to buy just the bolt from a dealer. Fourth option is to buy the idler and bolt from from an auto parts store. Fifth option is to buy a new car. Comes with a new bolt and idler. (LOL)
