Your transmission (4R44E or 5R55E) is an electronically operated transmission. It has a “TCM” ( transmission control module). Think of a “TCM” as a computer for the transmission, that has error code holding capabilities. Located near the tail shaft housing or inside the transmission is a “Speed Sensor”. The sensor helps the “TCM” to determine the correct shift points. When a speed sensor (or its circuit) is malfunctioning the “OD” light will flash. Hard shifting, delayed shifting or a failure to shift at all can be the result. You have to get your Explorer to a transmission professional that can scan the “TCM” for error codes. If the code indicates a speed sensor, don’t just jump in and change the sensor. Many amateur mechanics make this mistake. When faced with an error code they just go ahead and change the sensor, only to be left with the same error code in the end. They fail to confirm the circuit feeding the sensor. They don’t know that an issue with the circuit feeding the sensor will set the same code. More than 60% of “Returning Error Codes” are due to this fact.
