1999 Pontiac Sunfire belt tensioner

I have the 2.2l in my car and I changed the tensioner today. It was a nightmare because when you loosen the center bolt, it runs in to the frame before it clears the hole, leaving the tensioner in place. I had to use a steel rod and hammer the part out, then go to the hardware store and put the new one in using a bolt about 1/4" to 3/8" shorter. Is there a trick to doing this?

Yep....

Loosen the lower motor mounts, and with a floor jack, raise the engine up about 2 or 3 inches. That leaves you enough room to clear the threads in the motor. lift the tensioner out with the bolt in it. slide the bolt into the new one and fish it back in.

Thumbs up

Thanks so much. Hopefully I won't have to do it again.
