2006 Chevy Cobalt - Replacing passenger rear-view mirror
Need to replace the passenger side rear-view mirror on my son's 2006 Cobalt. Does anyone know first if you can just replace the mirror and not the whole mirror/holder assembly?
Second, in either case, what the procedure is for replacing either just the mirror or the mirror assembly entirely.
I need to check the salvage yards to see if one's available; and might have to remove it myself anyway.
Thanks,
greynold99

If it is anything like the Saturn (wifey's favorite mirror to break coming out of the garage), it is held in the door frame by 3 screws/bolts and once released, just falls off. If it is heated, watch out for the quick disconnect for the heating element.

Thanks Chandler,
Can you tell me if the assembly can be changed from the exterior or do you need to remove the door-panel to access the screws?

Best I remember the screws are accessible just above the door panel on the door frame. I didn't have to remove the panel.....she's still alive, isn't she? That would be a booger!

Chandler, looks like you were right about the similarity to a Saturn's mirror...
I was able to pick up a complete mirror assembly from local auto salvage yard for a 2005 Chev Cobalt.
3 mounting screws and the manual control-stick for the mirror adjustment and the screw/bolts look like they mount to the door about where the old vent window used to be... I have to wait for my son to come in for Christmas to see exactly how it's setup.
Do you remember if the cover plate where the mounting bolts come through was just pried off or screwed on?
Thanks,

every plate i have ever removed, was clip on. now, clips vary by design. mof, i broke some on imports. GM's ones are sort of loose. still, be careful, no need to snap that either. one plate, don't remember what car, had 3 clips and a lip down to the door, covered by door panel, that had screw through it. so, if it's sort of really stuck, take a good look all over the edges, if there's any extension this way or that way. otherwise, it's real common sense. a strong flat knife helps. not screwdriver, those have tendency to damage plastic edge.

Greynold99, glad you found it, and "gladder" I was close to being right. I think Ukryk has it covered. My wife's car was black, and the mirrors come in black, so no painting to be done. If you need to paint it, I would do it before I installed it. You can probably find matching paint either at a stealer, or at a SWP auto paint supplier.
