Having to install A starter on a 1988 Maxima tomorrow. Don't know the car very good at all. Trying to help a friend. Any suggestions or ideas ?

Welcome to the forums!! Yep. I'd start with a book(Clymer's, etc.) on the car that you can obtain locally at any parts house. Make sure you pull the negative cable from the battery. I am not sure of what we can help you with, since you haven't asked specific questions. Let us know and we'll help where we can.

Auto Zone should have that in their repair guides on-line as well.

hey, here's a tip for you. i had starter removed off older nissan once. make sure you have absolutely positively clearly marked how cables go back on it. we had some goofy one to work with, that surprisingly there was no way of telling that once they were removed. so, we crossed them, and starter refused to work thereafter.
