Idiot Light for Air Bag Won't Go Off

I drive a 2003 Kia Sorento SUV. One week ago the idiot light showing an icon of my air bag went on in my dash board. I have about 116,000 km or 70,000 miles on the odometer. I assume it's timed to go on at some point. Does it mean anything at all?
I'm finding it annoying and distracting.

HOW DO I TURN IT OFF without paying a dealer for their magic "computer" scan.

I don't know that it's "timed to go on" unless there is some mention of "check airbag system" in the scheduled maintenance. More likely a sensor or connector of some sort has failed. That would possibly cause the airbag not to deploy in an accident. I'd get it scanned and fixed.

A common cause is failure of the clock spring in the steering wheel. A scan, like Gunguy says will detect it.

Try your horn. If it doesn't work it probably is the clock spring.

Thanks Gunguy45. You're probably right and it's not worth taking a chance on safety.
The electrical system on my Kia has always been a nuisance. Often, I hear the relay(s)
clacking away while I drive or even after I turn the engine off in very humid weather.
It's been years but I just put up with it. Kia can never find the real issue. Thanks again.
