2002 Hyundai Elantra hesitating
My Elantra is hesitating primarily at highway speeds going up hill but can happen at any time. We had the charcoal canister recently replaced. The mechanic blew out all the vacuum lines, dropped the fuel tank to clean out the charcoal pellets. The cars engine light at the same time was coming on and off. The code read catalytic converter. They did not replace the fuel filter or the catalytic.
I suspect we will have to replace the catalytic. My question is, is it possible this hesitation is due to charcoal pellets still lodged somewhere in the vacuum system or the fuel filter or lines? Because the problem arises going up hill quite frequently, I am wondering if this slight degree in the angle of the car is causing the pellets to arrange themselves in a manner that is causing a fuel disruption.
The car is getting quite old, it has 144,XXX miles so any input on whether this is worth our time or money would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks guys!!!

not worth time and money
do you best to patch it, rid of it, buy 95/96 Civic made in Japan, be happy.
chumiser, please, do not take it personally. but it's a Hyundai.
on a curiosity side, Ford T back in time had gravity fuel feed from a gas tank positioned atop of the rear seat. going uphill, engine will stall because fuel will not flow into it. they had to traverse inclines in reverse. no, you do not have a Ford T.
how in the world did you get charcoal pallets into the fuel tank? you sure it's not EVAP canister? as it's in the engine bay, and fuel tank is you know where.
i am voting for going back to that mech and let him have it. judging from your description, there's a lot that could have been messed up. what was even the reason to start all this?
folks here will laugh, they know me, but run a few cans of Seafoam through your gas tank. it should clean everything in gas lines/injectors.

Yes, It is the EVAP.. I know, its a dilemma. My Galfriend has had good luck with this one until now, so shes attached.
I don't know the code. The Mech. said it indicated the catalytic. They were amazed how much charcoal was in the system.
Any recalls for this situation that anyone is aware of?? The exploding canister?? We figure we got good cause as it started by clogging up the vent from the fuel tank and shooting gas at you if you didn't duck and shutting down the pump throughout the fill.
Any added info before we make a decision would be great
Thanks

So I can provide you with the most accurate repair information I need to know the actual error code number or numbers that are set. If you don’t remember them it’s not a problem. Just go to Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, or O’Reilly Auto Parts and have another scan done. Scans are free at these stores. These stores also have a free tool loaner service where you can borrow tools for free. While at the store and having the scan done pick up a fuel pressure gauge and an engine vacuum pressure tester. Attach the fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and drive with the gauge attached. Drive at different speeds and engine loads and post the fuel PSI values as shown on the gauge. Do the same with the engine vacuum pressure gauge, but do both tests separately, to avoid confusion. These are basic and fundamental tests. (Mechanics 101 material). It’s shocking to me that your mechanic didn’t do these tests. Also shocking is why with over 144 thousand miles your mechanic didn’t change the fuel filter.

i'd say that if you REALLY had charcoal inside the fuel tank, you fuel pump is prolly busted.
you see, here's the thing. 144 000 miles should be nothing for a modern car. so, let me rephrase myself. it's a Hyundai. they do improve yearly, but....

i should have looked into this deeper, so i do apologize for a hastened post. EVAP canister is right next to the fuel tank. turns out to be, it is an infamous issue on them. not being able to fill the tank, gas gushing out.
unfortunately, this does not change your situation. i am still saying that fuel pump is probably clogged. or, indeed, there's obstruction in fuel lines, or fuel filter, or even fuel injectors. fuel pump normally has a pre-filter, that might have gotten clogged. i still recommend running at least 2 cans of seafoam through 2 tankfuls. your whole entire system needs cleaning.
you can google 2002 elantra EVAP canister, there are MANY posts about this issue. none of them is as radical as yours. but a car that is designed to allow charcoal into fuel tank is not a keeper on my book.
