'93 mercury sable check engine light

My mom's sable check engine light comes on at 65 mph or over. The temperature gauge reads steadily at middle of normal. Does anyone have any ideas on why this happens? Could it still be getting hot even though the gauge doesn't show it or could it be an oxygen censor?

Only way to know is to get the codes read. Too many possibilities to guess. If it's a 3.8L, they were notorious for blowing head gaskets, but as you say absent other indications (like overheating, etc) it's likely you don't have that problem. Their other issue was premature transmission failure, but your symptoms don't match that either. Time for a scan/code read.
