painting aluminum hood

My son has a mazda miata with an aluminum hood. He wants me to repair and paint his hood. It has a few hail dents but mostly the factory paint is peeling off. I don't know that I've ever painted any aluminum auto panels and was wondering if there is anything that needs to be done differently than you would for steel panels. I assume you'd use the same primers and paints as you would for most any automobile.

I think you need to use something called "self etching primer" on aluminum. It has some kind of special property that makes it bond with aluminum.

Thanks Jim, I'll look into that. He's put the hood paint job on hold. He might get a carbon fiber hood instead. He now wants to paint his camaro first...... but he still has to do some work to it before he can drive it over here......
