Street Rod, LT-1 ????
I built a 41 Buick street rod, in the late 90's. I installed a new Vette 1996 crate LT-1 in it, with 700- R tranny. Computer and all.
I have put 25k miles on it, but noticed something strange recently.
First I need to tell you that I start if often, but probably haven't let it run long enough most of the time so it can get up to operation temp. A few days ago when I started it it POPPED, and BACK FIRED so to speak, and also ran ROUGH until it did get up to temp. I passed it off as WATER in the stainless steel 304 grade exhaust system. It did throw out some water, but NOT really that much.
Tonight when I started it to move out of the garage, it POPPED once, but I shut if off once outside.
Any thoughts on this are most welcome, and if you need more info, just HOLLER.
Thanks,

Hi.
Its a shame your doing that to the motor. Your doing more damage starting it, and not letting it warm up.
Your better off moth balling it if your just going to start it on occasion and not open her up. That 25K miles may be more like 125K. Scored cylinder walls, etc.
Its probably carboned up real good.
Either moth ball it or run the thing. Or even sell it so it can be used.
I built some motors way back when.
Throw some 104+ octane boost in there. ( No MMT )
What oil you use? If Dino then throw two quarts of the matching brand synthetic to 3 quarts dino.
Go take it out and put 1000 miles on it. Add octane boost at each fill up.
Change oil. Should be black. Keep 4 quart dino to 1 quart syn. ( Keeps engine clean. )
The above will keep the motor clean. The octane boost is the same as carb cleaner. It will clean the fuel system.
The above is what I did with all my hot rods.
71 monte 402
69 chevelle 350/300hp
68 old 442 conv. (400/4 speed/ 2-Dual exhaust)
70 camaro rs/ss 396
69 chevy pick up (vette eater) 283 fuelie heads blueprinted. 3 on the tree.
68 grand prix 400.
If I only knew what these cars would be worth today.

Thank You, I took it out tonight, and after it warmed up, I ran it somewhat hard, and at different speeds. It did clear up, ran very smooth, so I will take your suggestions under consideration, and see how it goes. Carbon build up you commented on may have been the biggest issue. IMO

Yeah... Take it on the highway and open her up. Look in the rearview mirror. How much black smoke comes out the exhaust? You can fit a orange in the secondarys if its carburated. Open them up man, put the pedal to the metal!!!!!!!!!
Those engines want to run. 55 mph is idleing...LOL
What gears ya got in the rear??? Trans?
Oh. Obey the law and do the speed limit please.
