Tried jumping same result.
Cleaned cables, jumped with larger pickup, same result
tested starter at auto parts store - tested good.

Might want to temporarily remove serpentine belt (I'm assuming it's serpentine) to see if you have a locked up accessory. Can also get a socket on the crank pulley bolt and see that the engine turns freely (slight resistance due to comnpression). Sounds like typical starter failure except you had it checked; don't know how reliable that check is, though.

I'd be suspicious of a bad solenoid. They aren't expensive if you just want to try a new one.

Separate solenoid or on the starter? I know old Fords had separate on the firewall, but did they move it to the starter? Been a long time since I did a FoMoCo starter.

Good. I should have caught that before Joe; my wrecker and both Toyotas have it attached to the starter so I sometimes forget them.

Explorer won't start, re:

Take your serpentine belt off and try starting it, believe it or not those a/c compressor's lock up so tight that you would believe your motor has seized up tighter than Sherry's hat band,lol....Bill
