2002 Chevy Venture

At 105,000 miles I had the head gaskets replaced. Now 3 years later at 135,000 miles it has the same symptoms of overheating (red zone) and heater blowing cold air. I had two tests run. Coolant pressure check and all is ok, but there is compustion gases in the coolant so the conclusion is head gasket problem. I pulled the heads, but no evidence of a head gasket leak. I sent the heads to a machine shop to be checked for cracks, etc and waiting for their report.

Does anyone have comments or a suggestion as to what else might be the problem?

Well, the news is both heads are cracked, so I assume that is my problem. What causes heads to crack? Old age?

AFAIK most times it would be overtorque on the bolts, not tightening the bolts in the correct order or extreme overheating. Or a combination of all the above. And lets not forget faulty castings (though those would normally show up earlier). My 98 Dodge Dakota had to have a head replaced at about 30K. Would have been nice if they had told me the right and left heads were the same, just reversed when installed. The other head started acting up after the warranty expired. POS

It turned out that the water pump was bad, which caused the engine to overheat and crack both heads, and it was down hill from there...$2500!!! I say it should be good for another 135,000 miles.
