ignition lock cylinder & starter switch

i have a 2003 mitsubishi galant that i am replacing the ignition keylock cylinder.
my question is, is there a way to test the starter switch other than a visual inspection? how about the cylinder lock itself? what should i look for? any comments, tips or comments will be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

well, you will have nothing more than few simple contacts. very straightforward. as of cylinder lock... pain, as now you have to use 2 keys, one for lock, one for doors. unless it's power locks.
make sure battery is disconnected.
just a thought - as far as you have lock out, you can start car with a screwdriver. so can anyone else. don't think you have chipped key on 03 year.
why exactly do you have to do this?
