What crossover is best under $30,000?

I saw a black amethist , loaded Nissan Rogue 2012 with 4,000 miles and only $23,000 (sold over $28,000 new) But I checked reviews and a couple people said there tranny went out when it had over 110,000 miles. I have a PT Cruiser and my tranny went out when it had over 105,000 miles. I do not want another car with bad transmissions. But since I am retired I don't drive the 400 miles everyweek. I looked at the Jeep Compass but didn't drive one yet. Maybe today. I may be able to spend $35,000 for a new crossover for 7 yrs financing but don't know if I should get a used one or new yet. The Nissan dealer said an older couple bought it and she didn't like the suv; traded it in for a car.

I have the Dodge Caliber SRT4 which is based on the same build as the base Caliber/compass.

Speaking from the Caliber front (really same vehicle, different name and body panels), they are decent cars/crossovers.
The fuel millage of the CVT transmission isn't as good as it could be. Gets average millage. The few that came with Manual 5-speeds got better milage (as expected).
If you want something more sport car(ish), the Caliber SRT4 has all the room of the other Calibers and Compasses, but just under 300hp at the wheels (stock was 285hp, 265ftlb) and with the 6-speed, will be in the 30mpg range.

The only issues I know of with the non-srt calibers (and assuming compass as well) is that if the tranny needs any work, it's a full replacement. That being said, I have not heard of too many people needing to replace their CVT transmissions.

Is there something specific about a crossover that you are looking for?

Here is a quick picture of my fun to drive crossover (stock 08 Dodge Caliber SRT4)

I should also mention that this has really good cargo space. I did a drive from Northern Ontario to Sydney NS with two young boys (in car seats), the wife, camping gear and wedding cloths and was still comfortable and in the low to mid 30MPG range (over 2600km each direction).
I've also fit a full mtn bike in the trunk, with the tires and seat still on the bike.

What crossover is best under #30,000?

Thanks. I was looking for an suv ; now they come out crossovers. I want one bc years ago I had a Pontiac Gran Prix and I sat low; then in 2002 I bought my woody PT and it I sit higher. I like sitting higher. (My husband has a Saturn Sky and I do not like sitting that low) I'll check out the Calibers today.
Thanks again for responding

You should check on the RAV4...it's always one of the highest rated small SUVs. That and the Honda CRV.

Much will depend on your driving habits and passenger/cargo needs.

Ain't it the truth! I vouch for CR-V or its Element sibling with both hands and feet. Great cars. Of course, you appear to be set on domestics, so good luck there... There's Honda Crosstour also, but it might be too strange of appearance for one who likes Dodge's squareness.

PS CVTs are GREAT!!! Esp Nissan ones.

The Dart isn't a cross over however. From what I can see, it's a hair bigger then the Neons, and smaller then the current Avengers. The OP was looking for something that rode taller then a sedan.

The Rav4 as mentioned is a fairly inexpensive CUV if you stay with the FWD and the smaller (not so useful) inline 4 engine. The only set back I had seen with the Rav4 is the interior makes hauling stuff (inside) a bit tough.

The liberty is a lot of money for what you get really.

What crossover is best under $30,000?

I drove around yesterday and checked out a few suv's. I ended up going back to where I saw the 2012 SV Nissan Rougue. It only has 4500 miles for $23500 I did check out the new ones that are loaded like mine. I ended up buying it . The warranty only cover the trans since it was used, so I bought the bumper to bumper coverage for $11 a month for the five years . I thought the full factory warranty would still be effect but they said no , not used cars. At least it is only $11 a month = $660 for the 5 years warranty.

I think they lied to you....
From Nissans warranty for 2012
"This warranty is generally transferable from the original
‘owner other than a Nissan dealer’ (OWNER) to
subsequent owners of the vehicle at any time ownership
of the vehicle is transferred, without any action
on your part; except that this warranty is not
transferable but is instead VOID if during the first six
months after delivery to the original OWNER: (1)
ownership of the vehicle is transferred from the
original OWNER, and (2) the vehicle is registered
outside of the United States."

Now...it may depend somewhat on whether this was an independent or not...but it appears from your first post it was a Nissan dealer. I'd be calling Nissan Customer Care 1-800-647-7261

Ya, I always thought the warranty if still in effect [mileage/months] was transferable to the next owner. We bought my wife's merc when it was 1 yr old but we still got the remainder of the new car warranty. That said, the price doesn't sound as high as most I've seen quoted but the fine print can vary as to what they cover and what you have to pay.

Thanks for that 1-800. They said it should be and to call a Nissan dealer. So I did and he also said yes. So I called the Hyandai dealer I bought my Rogue from and she said it does, I just bought the extended warranty till Dec 2016 (60 months ). I don't remember her saying that. Sorry. Anyways, what can I say, I'm a blond. Thanks again. I love my car even though I wish I could afford a Lexus or an Infinity suv. At least it has a lot of chrome on it and loaded; (not pimped out, though)

I'd seriously look at the exclusions on that extended warranty and what hoops you have to jump through. Not to mention, who services it and how reimbursement is made.

Very rarely will a dealer question any repairs on a factory warranty...but the ones from independent companies may require proof of every maintenance performed by a shop or for you to provide receipts for everything. I don't think they can legally say you can't change your own air filter, oil, etc.

I've even heard that they may be able to require you to have repairs done at one of their participating shops which could be 50 miles away.

The only extended warranty I've ever seen recommended was one offered by the factory....not an outside company through the dealer. And they were never as cheap as what you got. The warranty site I quoted from even had a section about extended warranties.

They charged me $1229 extended warranty. I went back and wanted to know where they got that amount when she quoted me $11 a month for 5 years. Which I get $660. The woman who had me sign about 10 papers was not there and the other woman , to me , was talking in circles. Then I said you mean the orig warranty does not transfer and she said no. I am calling the other woman back . I know $660 is low, but that is what she quoted other day. The Nissan dealer told me the warranties do transfer, but I bought the crossover at a Hyandai dealer. I read in the web that sometimes warranties do not transfer.

You may not have much time if any...you are getting the runaround. What was on your contract? $1229 or $660? What other charges were there?

You had a contract...what did it say?

My advice...get the sales manager in and say..."Take it back...your employees lie!"

This is so typical of the car dealers...esp used cars.

Personally...I'd pull in and say here's your car and walk away...if you still have time to do that...but I doubt you do.

Sorry...just my feelings.

Contract reads "months 60 miles 60,000 $1299.00"

I don't see how they lie and get away with it, if the woman did lie.
I never had this problem when buying a car.
I will car woman back that wrote the contract and look into this further.
