chked fuses and ignition relays-ok
changed ignition lock cylinder and switch
conditions
when the key is turned to start the clock display goes off (not dim)

more info
thanks for the responses,
yes it is an aftermarket system by ATS, Advanced Technology Systems. it is a 8 pin "key" that disables the car from starting. it is so cheap looking that i never used it. left it plugged in all the time.
the new key i installed is an ignition key ( no chip ) and it checks out fine. seen last post i have also checked;
inhibitor switch ( prnd switch ) - ok
power transistor - ok
ignition coil - ok
solenoid - ok
i want to remove this anti-theft system. any ideas?
thanks, lokahi

I know this is diy.com, but sometimes you have to surrender and take it to a garage; in your case one that's good at electrical troubleshooting. Your kind of issue doesn't really lend itself to diagnosing on a forum.
