96 Explorer column shift lever

Anyone had the shift lever guts apart in a 96 Explorer 4WD A/T w/tilt wheel?? Shift lever is really sloppy....into reverse or neutral is OK but is a B*TCH to get into drive. Had it sort of apart the other night....can see nothing obviously broken, am curious as to a bushing shot or something maybe. My HAYNES Manual has NO pictures to help.

Any guidance/suggestions welcome and appreciated. Thanks

The linkage goes down thru the column......then thru the firewall......to the transmission.

Did you try disconnecting the linkage that was under the vehicle ?
Was the problem definitely in the column ?

these always have screws come loose from the back of the shifter. the arm that attaches to the shift cable. if you look under the dash youll see two screws "torques". they have a spring behind it so i would remove one thread lock it, then do the other.
