Question Trying to save lots on 2001 Mitsibushi Montero Limited shift cable

Got an 01 mits montero limited.3.5 auto with the manual shift built in. The shift cable is getting loose and have I have a hard time putting the thing in Drive. I can get reverse and neutral, but have to wait till it's real warm, and with a little finnesse can get it into drive. Does anybody know if I can get in there and tighten it up (like a brake cable on a bike?) A new cable costs over 400 bucks. I need to know how to take that middle console apart around the shift knob? Please Help!!!

It would seem the cable is just binding if it goes in gear at all. Try getting a haynes manual and read through that. Search the Mitsubishi forums too.

Emerad,

I've seen this before on your type of vehicle. It could be the cable but I doubt it. A more common is the "Park Interlock Switch". Visit the link below and read it carefully.

Montero: XLS..Wife drove it friday with no problems. - JustAnswer
