Swapping 245 to 285 fill me in on it
This is for a 2005 Exployer I now have 245-65-17 and need a tire...
Buddy of mine has a shop and he has a set of 285-65-17 with new tread he said would be a good fit. This is my wifes ride I have been reading were the gas mileage is diff..
Will somebody give me the run down is this a good move or not.
He wants $125 for all 4 tires he said anybody else $300
Tks

Replacing just one tire....no no no...get the correct size. The width is diff by almost 1 1/2"...the sidewall height by almost 1" and the diameter by 2".
It will probably mess with anti-lock brakes and cause the other front tire to wear oddly...as well as strange handling.

That all depends on the tire, brand, and tread pattern. If he's willing to stand behind them and will replace them if it doesn't work...well...might be worth it. Still depends on whether they actually fit and won't interfere with other components or brake lines. Are they appropriate for your wheel? The size difference would worry me unless they would fit ok.
Many tire sites can tell you if they are appropriate for your wheel and vehicle. Discount Tire, and Tire Rack are just 2...there are others.

As long as they clearance everything ok [including body travel] they should be ok but it will likely change the accuracy of the speedometer. It will show a little less speed than what the vehicle is actually going. 4x4s should always have matching size and tread pattern on all 4 wheels!

I would absolutely not do it. You change the whole dynamics of the vehicle. Since its a explorer they are top heavy and you have a higher chance of a roll over in a panic stop or blow out.
I would not put nothing less then OEM suggested tire size.
Just my opinion though.....
