Squealing A/C compressor

I have an 98 Ford escort ZX2. The issue with the car is that whenever I have the A/C on the car blows cold air out but, it makes a loud squealing noises when in idol. It tends to sound like a bad bearing or the A/C is going out like something not greased. But could it be low on freon or compressor oil? Please Respond!

Welcome to the forums.

It would not have anything to do with freon charge and I doubt compressor oil either.

Have you tried turning the air conditioning off to see if the noise changes at idle ?

Your problem sound like a front compressor bearing. I'm not sure what is involved in replacing it.

It could also just be a slightly loose/stretched belt or a worn tensioner pulley. At idle, if the compressor cycles on and off...it sucks a lot of power from the engine for the compressor as well as the alternator, causing slippage.

Well I had the belt replaced twice last because of the belt breaking.

Still not fixed!

I've went to a junk yard pulled an original compressor apart found out the whole clutch system isn't based on bearings but half cylinders and I rotated the clutch while the car was off and there was no noise thinking belt tensioner any ideas?

John,

The red flag here is your claim that the squealing sound stops immediately when the air conditioning is idle. In other words, your A/C compressor is on the verge of failing. The word "Verge" is the operative word here, and explains why your still getting cold air when the A/C is on, and why the noise is gone when the A/C is off. Look at it this way, if it was another component (alternator for example or a belt tensioner), you would have the squealing noise regardless of the A/C being idle or not.

Thank You
Amy
