'66 Bonneville - How do i torque this odd hex nut!
Hi
I own a 1966 pontiac bonneville and need some help ...the hex nut keeping the power steering pulley on its shaft on the pump is a 'slotted hex nut' of some sort - i believe they are self tightening so they won't fall of the rotating shaft?
Anyway - question is this - what's the correct way to unscrew and then torque back on a moving/revolving shaft? I'm worried about damaging the shaft/power steering pump if i hold/clamp/or do something daft...
Any help would be most appreciated!
Thanks
Kev

I don't know about a '66 Bonneville, but later model GM's use a pressed-on pulley that takes a special puller. Can you post a pic?
Here's one style of puller and installer set:

thanks for your response
these early models are more straightforward in that the pulley just slides off when the self tightening hex nut is removed....the problem being the rotating shaft that the nex screws onto...im guessing it needs to be clamped some how....
