Impala paint touch up

We just bought within the last month a used 2005 Chevrolet Impala which for the most part is fine but has some paint condition problems. I bought the paint and had it matched to the vehicle so now I can paint the damaged area with a can of spray paint and then some clear coat after it drys. I have never painted even part of a car before just a wheel barrel which turned out o.k. So advice on the process along with links to videos on touching up the paint are appreciated. Here is a picture of the car.

It has some damage to the door too with the same paint problem. I have body tape and plastic I just want to get a good idea as to how to actually apply the paint. Wondering too if I should do just one pass or does it need two passes?

First you need to sand!! It will take more sanding than you think to smooth out the failing clear coat. Once that is taken care of you can evaluate whether or not you need a primer. It's hard to say how many coats it will take but it will be more than 2. Multiple light coats are always better than one or two heavy coats.

Motorweek, the PBS car show, once did some repairs of this type in a "Goss' Garage" segment. Might be worth trying to find it. I think that it was a green Ford Explorer that they used as the example car.
