adding power steering

I want to add power steering to my 1986 subaru gl. Has anyone done this or attempting this know how difficult this may be. I've built cars before but sadly never added anything that wasn't there originally. So this is a new concept to me. Thank you.

Welcome to the forums.

Converting your steering from manual to power is a major undertaking. With the age of the vehicle it will be even harder with rusted parts and fasteners.

You would need to change the rack and pinion, add a power steering pump, install the lines as well as find a bracket(s) for the pump.

Back in the 50's they sold an aftermarket power steering booster kit BUT cars weren't as complicated back then and I doubt you could find any such kit today As PJ noted, it's a pretty big undertaking to change out all the related parts. IMO it would be better to leave it like it is - just be sure the car is always rolling when you turn the wheel, that will take a lot of the effort out of steering.
