5sp manual gear box troubles

So I am trying to get my 2007 suzuki sx4 5spd with 138,000k miles back on the road after sitting for a year.

Last year I broke the floor shift assembly because I could not get the car into gear. It was shifting hard. So I greased the gear shift linkage that was on top of the transmission and that worked for a few months. Then it happened again. Out of frustration, I was rather rough with the gear shifter and broke it.

Luckily, I still had my 03 wrx, so I drove that until last week when the head gaskets blew at 183,000 miles. I went out and bought my self a nissan juke but still want to get the ole sx4 on the road.

So, I put the new floor assembly in, greased the linkage and the gear shifter seems to go through all the gears. However, it seems that the car is in 3rd gear no matter where I have the gear shifter, including reverse.

Not sure what to do next. Any advice? Am I looking at having to replace the whole tranny. Thanks in advance.

Did you care to check clutch master fluid level? Betcha it's empty or very low.

sounds like the shifter is not in the right hole. take it out and try again.

The shifter

The shifter and assembly comes as one unit and the shift cables hook up to it.

Could it be possible that when I was moving the shift linkage on top of the transmission by hand, the gear alignment between the linkage and gear shifter is off? Or did I tweak the shift forks internally?
