anti theft system

My wife has a 2003 merc sable with 173k. She said when she drove it yesterday the theft light came on several times and the engine would misfire at the same time. She said it died completely once but did fire back up. I looked thru the Haynes manual but either they don't cover it or I missed it.

I disconnected the battery thinking it might reset the theft system. We went to town and back, it drove fine so hopefully it's back to normal. Does anybody know anything about these systems? All I know is there is supposed to be a chip in the key that is part of the system.

Usually.... a problem with the key will keep the engine from starting not shut it down once started. Do you have a second key you run the car on ?

Did you check the owner's manual on specifics of the system?

CJ, I meant to but got sidetracked I'll look today

PJ, I thought I posted a reply yesterday anyway, we have 2 keys but I used my wife's key yesterday to verify it wasn't her key. She drives the car 90% of the time.

I looked at the owners manual and all it says is if the light comes on while the engine is running or stays on after start up - go see the dealer for repairs
