Unhappy What no engine trouble code?

I've got a 2011 Kia Rio that has started to hesitate and idle roughly. It hasn't caused an engine code to appear yet. I would like some help in narrowing down the possible causes. Without the codes is it next to impossible to troubleshoot? Thanks:

Have you checked for stored codes or are you waiting for the Check Engine Light to come on ?

Before cars had codes, we checked spark plugs, distributor, fuel lines & various other things. Try it.

A lot of things can cause problems and not set a code even with a hard failure. Idle Air valves, crank sensors, you name it.

A few years ago the speedo quit in my car along with the cruise control and loss of overdrive. There was no CEL and no DTCs set. The obvious cause was the speed sensor.
A new sensor fixed the problem and testing showed the old, bad sensor was not questionable at all; it was stone cold dead.
