How do you re torque over tightened wheel nuts?

When the wheel nuts are too tight, what exactly are you suppose do to re torque them safely?

Do you simple loosen each nut just a bit, or until somewhat loose & straight after re torque it? One nut at a time?

Or loosen all first while jacked up & re torque in the star pattern?

thanks

Loosen all slightly (no more than 1/4 turn at a time), moving in the correct sequence for the number of lugs on your rims.

Then retighten to specifications, 1/4 turn at a time, using the same sequence for tightening.
