2002 Tahoe - rear diff noise

My '02 Tahoe (180k miles) has begun making some rear diff noise. I just changed the gear oil today. What else can I check on my own? Is sounds like a clanking, not whirring.

Have you ruled out the rear U-joint?

I agree, check the U-joints. Is it a 1-piece or 2-piece driveshaft? If 2-piece, check the carrier bearing as well. Not sure, but if a 1-piece, there may be a center support. If so, check it for play.

I have not checked the U-joints yet. I will when I get a chance. If there is play, what is the remedy?

Replace the U-joint although sometimes adding grease [if it has a fitting] will get you by a little longer.
