How do you test a 3rd brake light out of car?

Looking to buy a used 3rd brake light hooked to a panel with regular brake lights. This is for a Olds. The part has been taken out of the car, question how can you test a brake light out of the car? The plug in is there just don't want to mess up. Can you hook a wire to both the positive and negative of a battery then insert into plug of wiring harness on light? Reason for this is I want to make sure the light works before spending the money on it. Thanks

It's just a 12 volt bulb so as long as you don't exceed 12-13 volts it should light if it's good.

Sometimes the 3rd brake light is controlled by the multi switch behind the steering wheel. I think that's why it was removed. They couldn't fix it because they didn't know what to do.
