2003 Ford Escape high speed miss

2003 Ford Escape V6 dies a couple times for my wife, now has a miss at about 4000 RPM's. No codes. Idles good and runs good until it hits that 4000 RPM. Any ideas where I should start. I was getting ready to replace the plugs and coil packs (tune up), should I start there?

Have you checked with the dealer for recalls/TSBs? Our '01 Mazda Tribute (same car basically) would just crap out driving down the road, on off ramps, whenever. Needed a re-flash of the computer, but they didn't come out with the fix for something like 3 years later.

If you google your vehicle for TSBs you'll come up with a list of things the dealer might cover. Some may be vehicle specific and require your VIN number. There are often recalls that they don't notify you about On my 2010 jeep [out of warranty] I had a transmission line leak but found a TSB on it which required the dealer to replace the entire line for free ..... which beat me having to cut/splice the line

Just curious, but is it routinely rev'ed to 4000+ rpm?

Ahhhh...you know this car has a rev limiter? If you were parked and revving to 4000 rpm it will cough and sputter.

Didn't know that Gunguy. Doing a tune up with new plugs, coil packs, PCV valve intake gaskets and while I am there valve cover gaskets. It only has 120,00 miles on it. Been a great car. Maybe EGR valve.

Well, I guess they must have changed something between 2001 and 2003. We had 2 complete tranny rebuilds and one partial. New torque converter and valve body. All before 100K. A/C finally crapped out just before we got rid of it. Sold it to a guy in Seattle who didn't care about A/C (guess he didn't care about de-fogging his windows either).

But then, I violated my own rule for the second time in my life. Never buy a 1st model year vehicle. Did it with a 97 Dodge Dakota....what a POS that was.
