Water pump gasket question

Replacing the water pump on by vehicle. The new water pump came with gaskets made of a fiber or cardboard/cork material. Should I trust those or should I go with a replacement gasket made of steel and rubber?

I see no reason not to trust the gasket that came with the pump. Years ago I've made gaskets from cereal boxes and they didn't fail.

Get metal and rubber. For effort placed into this, it is not worth hassling with possible do over.

Btw, always post vehicle year and model. Many newer car do not have gaskets at all, it's all silicone now.

I would use non-hardening RTV on both sides of the gasket provided. Double protection. Follow directions on the container for the RTV.

If you install it correctly the gasket that came with the pump will be fine. If you don't install it correctly the gasket will leak regardless of the material it is made of.
