Freestar: Banging Backing Up

2005 Ford Freestar. When backing up when I apply and release the brakes I get a banging noise. I do not get the noise when I am going forward and applying or releasing the brakes.

Check for loose items in any cargo area storage compartments? Maybe a loose jack or tire change gear? Can't think of anything mechanical that would do that, at least not to the extent of being described as "banging".

Thanks. Will check. Knew I getting too much money ahead. If I don't find anything I'll let my mechanic scratch his head. Do remember now that I'm think about it when I first got it he said something about a noise backing up being a loose axle mount? He didn't think it needed immediate repair and said it was only backing up. Does that make sense?

Don't know what a axle mount is. Need better description. I have a broken upper motor mount that has been there for many years. It only comes in to play when I back up fast. Motor will raise and bang. Almost need to pull engine out to replace.

Pugsi, thanks for your reply. That makes sense. Well after the first I'll talk to my mechanic if I don't find anything loose though it doesn't sound like that.

So where is the noise coming from? Front or rear? What kind of noise is it? SPECIFICALLY?

Seems to be from the rear. Banging is about as specific as I can get. I'll try backing out later today and see if I can be more specific.

Well heck couldn't get it to make the noise today. Will just have to wait and see if it starts again. Thanks to all who replied.

I remember on an older drum brake vehicle, the self adjuster had broken and when you backed up it would try to adjust, but just click or knock.
