Celica oil leak

My nephew has a 1.8 in a 1996 Toyota Celica. I haven't looked at it yet, but he says there is oil pooling under the car. Uses about 1/2 qt a day. He rules out the filter or pan leaking. If this is a rear main what is involved with replacing that seal? Would the transmission be taken out with the engine or unbolted and left in place?

Any other pointers appreciated.

How many miles are on the car? If it's a rear main, the transmission has to be removed along with the fly wheel. If the crank shaft is out of balance, the seal will blow again. Look at it & let us know.

187K, Shorty or around there. Is there a crank problem there with balance other than a harmonic balancer?

It'll be a couple weeks before I can get down there. I'll check and report back.

Thanks for the help.

Oil leaks can be tough to find. It can be a leak up top that runs down the block in a place that can't be seen and pools on the floor.

I will usually put down paper under the engine to determine exactly what area it's dripping from and then go from there.
