Cool Removing adhesive glue from a rag top

We purchased a rag top Miata that had a new rag top put on before we bought it. I live in sunny California and it gets very very hot in the San Joaquin Valley. So......the glue/adhesive that was used in making this rag top has melted and stained the top every place that the glue/adhesive was used. How can I remove this substance from the canvas..........Can any one help with this.....

WD40, cooking oil, ... depends on the glue sometimes. Might also be easier done with the top in the hot sun.

This is a tough type of stain, and was apparently not uncommon on some early factory Miata tops. Goo gone seems to be a solution, you apply it, let sit for a few minutes, agitate gently with a soft toothbrush, and blot it off (rather rub or smear it about). Wash off the goo gone residues with 303 cleaner, or simple green and a wet towel. Let dry completely, and do over repeatedly til you get it as good as it will get. You might not get it all, but with a bit of luck will reduce the staining. It may well bleed out again under high heat.
